Assistant Professor, Preventive Medicine & Public
Health
Breast and colorectal
cancer – these are two important health concerns
that get Kimberly’s attention. Through a combination of health services
research employing large administrative datasets and intervention studies, Kim
works to better understand the underpinnings of cancer screening utilization.
She is currently assessing mammography facility-related characteristics that
lead to enhanced patient satisfaction and high repeat mammography rates. In addition,
she and her team recently recruited over 300 African American women for a study
assessing the effect of a radiolucent breast cushion on mammography-related discomfort
and intention to return for routine mammograms. Kimberly has also deployed touch-screen
computer tablet surveys within rural and urban primary care practices to test
whether tailored health messages result in increased discussions and receipt
of colorectal cancer screenings. Kimberly also directs a popular medical school
elective in international health and participates in various local and national
services which focus on cancer prevention and control.
